The real downsides to High ISO

Featured Monday, 19 November 2012 11:10

Noise is one thing, but it is not the only downside to using high iso.

It seriously degrades the colour and tonal range in your shot.

I sure wish I had a choice to shoot with a lower ISO, but some, if not many high school gyms that I have to shoot in are very poorly lit and if it weren't for the camera's ability to increase its ISO, I'd be in a world of trouble. I need to shoot action sports at least at 500 sec, sometimes I even have to drop it to 320 sec. and that's using a D300 and a Nikon 50 1.8g lens at ISO 6400. Matt is right, the color
s dynamic range is greatly affected when you do this. I do get much better results at ISO 3200 and even better using a D700 or a D3.
